When looking for things to do in Corfu with the whole family, Corfu Aquarium offers a unique and family-friendly experience that combines education, exploration, and fun. One of the aquarium’s most captivating residents is the delicate Long Snout Seahorse, a species that fascinates both adults and children.

A visit to the Long Snout Seahorse exhibit is not just about observing; it’s an opportunity for interactive learning. Children can discover fun facts about the seahorse’s unique life cycle. Long Snout Seahorses are easily recognizable by their elongated snouts, which they use to suck up tiny prey like plankton and small crustaceans. The Long Snout Seahorse is full of surprises! Did you know that it’s the male who gets pregnant? The female deposits her eggs into his special pouch, and he carries them until they hatch, giving birth to tiny, fully-formed baby seahorses. These little creatures are also masters of disguise – they can change color to blend in with seagrass or coral, making them almost invisible to predators. And here’s another fun fact: despite their delicate appearance, seahorses are excellent swimmers, using their dorsal fin to propel themselves while staying perfectly upright. Watching them in action is both mesmerizing and educational, making them a favorite for family-friendly activities with kids at Corfu. This is a perfect moment to discuss with your kids about marine ecosystems, conservation, and the importance of protecting these delicate species.

Corfu Aquarium offers a variety of other activities with kids, making it a complete destination for family outings. Young visitors can explore our open pool, learn about reptiles and other marine life, and enjoy the colorful fish displays. The aquarium’s layout allows families to move at their own pace, making it easy to combine education with relaxation. After exploring, you can also unwind at the seaside café or enjoy a stroll along the nearby beach, making the visit a full family-friendly day out.

Whether you’re a local or a tourist searching for things to do in Corfu, Corfu Aquarium provides an engaging and memorable experience. For families, it’s a wonderful way to spark curiosity, learn together, and create lasting memories in a safe and welcoming environment.

Next time you plan a family day in Corfu, make sure to include Corfu Aquarium and meet the Long Snout Seahorse – it’s a magical experience that both kids and adults will treasure!

🐟 Meet the Grey Triggerfish

The grey triggerfish, sometimes called the grey filefish, is a medium-sized fish easily recognized by its tough, textured skin and distinctive body shape. This fascinating fish is not just a looker; it’s full of personality!

🌟 Fun and Interesting Facts

Diet: Benthic invertebrates, including crabs, sea urchins, shrimp, sand dollars, lobsters, and mollusks.

Strong swimmers: Despite their bulky appearance, they can move quickly through the water, darting in and out of rocky reefs.

Weird Info: They have a small mouth with a strong jaw and specialized teeth used to crush and chisel holes in their hard-shelled prey.

General Info:

They live near rocky seafloors between 10 and 100m deep and are often found in mussel beds.

They tend to be solitary creatures, but can also be found in small groups of a few dozen, especially during the mating season.

During the summer, the female burrows a nest in the sand. She cares for her eggs there, while the male guards the area, driving intruders away – even biting them when necessary.

Previously limited to tropical waters, it is now becoming more and more common in cold temperate zones. This change in its range could be due to the warming of cooler waters.

When you think of exciting sea creatures, a snail might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But at Corfu Aquarium, our Charonia variegata – also known as the Atlantic Triton’s Trumpet – is full of surprises that will change the way you see these shelled wanderers.

Meet the Giant of the Snail World

The Charonia variegata isn’t your average garden snail. It can grow up to 40 cm (16 inches) long, making it one of the largest sea snails in the Atlantic Ocean. Its striking spiral shell, patterned in beautiful shades of cream, brown, and orange, makes it a living piece of art.

A Predator in Disguise

Don’t let the slow movements fool you – this snail is a skilled hunter. It preys on starfish and sea cucumbers, using a long proboscis to inject digestive enzymes and then gently “sip” its meal. It may sound strange, but it plays an important role in keeping reef ecosystems balanced.

Nature’s Camouflage Expert

Its beautifully patterned shell doesn’t just look good – it acts as camouflage against rocky seabeds and coral reefs, helping it avoid predators while stalking its prey.

The Musical Shell

Empty Charonia variegata shells have been used in various cultures as natural trumpets, producing deep, resonant sounds. While we don’t blow into our display shells here at Corfu Aquarium, it’s easy to imagine why these beautiful shells were prized by sailors and islanders alike.

🌊 Come meet the Charonia variegata at Corfu Aquarium – proof that even the slowest creatures can be some of the most fascinating. With our knowledgeable guides, interactive tours, and a variety of incredible marine life, it’s an experience worth having for visitors of all ages.

When it comes to reptiles, few creatures are as eye-catching and dramatic as the Frilled Lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii). Known for its frilly “collar” and surprising bursts of energy, this lizard is a small wonder with big personality.

A Collar That Steals the Show

The Frilled Lizard’s most famous feature is the large, colorful frill around its neck. Usually tucked away, the frill expands like a fan when the lizard feels threatened – making it look much bigger and startling predators (or delighted visitors!).

Speedy Escape Artist

Despite its dramatic display, the Frilled Lizard prefers running over fighting. It can sprint on its powerful hind legs, sometimes even “running” up trees to escape danger. This makes it one of the most agile and entertaining reptiles to watch.

A Lizard With an Appetite for Insects

Frilled Lizards are insectivores, feeding mainly on crickets, spiders, and other small invertebrates. Watching them hunt shows just how quick and precise these little predators can be – truly impressive for a lizard that often looks more like a tiny dragon than a hunter.

Life in the Wild and in Captivity

Native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea, Frilled Lizards spend much of their life in trees but are also excellent climbers on the ground. At Corfu Aquarium, we aim to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible so visitors can see them behaving naturally and confidently.

Why You Should Visit the Frilled Lizard at Corfu Aquarium

Whether you’re young or simply young at heart, the Frilled Lizard is a delightful surprise. Kids love seeing the frill pop out like magic and marvel at its “dragon-like” appearance, while adults appreciate its clever survival strategies and unique behavior.

With our passionate guides sharing fun facts, hunting tricks, and frill-flaring demonstrations, the Frilled Lizard is an animal that captures imaginations and brings a smile to everyone who visits.

🌿 Come meet the Frilled Lizard at Corfu Aquarium – small in size, big in personality, and unforgettable for all ages!

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Corfu with kids, a visit to Corfu Aquarium is a must. Among the many fascinating marine creatures you’ll discover is the spiny starfish — a colorful and surprising resident of the Mediterranean Sea that amazes children and adults alike.

Perfect for curious minds and family adventures in Corfu, here are some incredible spiny starfish facts you’ll learn during your visit.

1. It’s Not Really a Fish

Despite the name, the spiny starfish isn’t a fish at all. It’s an echinoderm, closely related to sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Its star-shaped body and spiny texture protect it from predators.

2. It Has No Brain or Blood

Hard to believe, but true — the spiny starfish has no brain or blood. Instead, it pumps sea water through its body to move and deliver nutrients. It reacts to touch and light through a simple nerve network.

3. It Walks with Hundreds of Tube Feet

Beneath each of its five arms are hundreds of tiny suction-cup-like tube feet. These help it crawl along the seabed and cling to rocks or glass — something visitors love to see up close at Corfu Aquarium.

4. It Eats in a Fascinating Way

The spiny starfish is a predator, feeding on mussels, clams, and other shellfish. It pushes its stomach out of its body, slips it inside the shell of its prey, digests the food externally, and then pulls the stomach back in.

5. Colorful but Spiky

Often pink, blue, or orange, spiny starfish can grow up to 70 cm (27 inches) in diameter. Their sharp spines help protect them from predators and prevent handling by curious hands.

6. It Can Regrow Lost Arms

If a spiny starfish loses an arm, it can regrow it as long as its central body remains intact. This regeneration ability is one of nature’s most impressive survival skills.

Family Fun at Corfu Aquarium
