Name: Painted Comber (Serranus Scriba)

Where we find them: Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the Bay of Biscay to Senegal, including the Canary Islands. It is also prevalent throughout the Mediterranean and Black Seas. In the Mediterranean, it is commonly found along rocky coastlines and seagrass beds.

Average Lifespan: 16 years

Diet: The painted comber is a carnivorous and territorial ambush predator. Its diet primarily consists of cephalopods, bivalves, crustaceans, fish, and worms.

Weird Info: The painted comber is a synchronous hermaphrodite, meaning each individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs simultaneously. This unique reproductive strategy allows for flexible mating roles during spawning.

Πού τις συναντάμε: Στον ανατολικό Ατλαντικό Ωκεανό, από τον Βισκαϊκό Κόλπο έως τη Σενεγάλη, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των Καναρίων Νήσων. Είναι επίσης ευρέως διαδεδομένος σε ολόκληρη τη Μεσόγειο και τη Μαύρη Θάλασσα. Στη Μεσόγειο την συναντάμε κυρίως σε βραχώδεις ακτές.

Μέσο Προσδόκιμο Ζωής: 16 χρόνια

Διατροφή: Σαρκοφάγο που τρέφεται με κεφαλόποδα, δίθυρα, καρκινοειδή, μικρά ψάρια και σκουλήκια.

Η περίεργη πληροφορία για τις πέρκες: Είναιερμαφρόδιτες – κάθε μία φέρει τόσο αρσενικά όσο και θηλυκά αναπαραγωγικά όργανα. Έτσι,  γεννούν και γονιμοποιούν μόνες του τα αυγά τους.

Γενικές Πληροφορίες:

• Έχει πλευρικά συμπιεσμένο σώμα με μυτερό ρύγχος.
• Το χρώμα του κυμαίνεται από γκρι έως πορφυροκόκκινο, με 5 έως 7 σκούρες κάθετες ρίγες στα πλευρά.
• Το κεφάλι της κοσμείται με κυματιστές γαλάζιες γραμμές και κόκκινες κηλίδες, ενώ στο μέσο του σώματος διακρίνεται μία χαρακτηριστική πορφυρο-μπλε κηλίδα.
• Απαντάται σε βάθη από 5 έως 150 μέτρα. Την συναντάμε σε βραχώδεις κοιλότητες κατά τη διάρκεια της ημέρας και το σούρουπο βγαίνει για να κυνηγήσει.
• Συνήθως ζει μόνη της αν και μπορεί να ζήσει και σε μικρές ομάδες.
