Name: Shamefaced Boxer Crab/ Shamefaced crab (Calappa granulata)

Where we find them: They are found all along the eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean, the coastal waters of Europe, the Red Sea, and the entire Mediterranean Sea, thus also around the Maltese Islands.

Size: length 10 cm

Average lifespan: No official records (similar species live up to 10 years).

Diet: They feed on mollusks and bivalves. They are large and powerful; formed forceps operate with a scissor-like action. They are well adapted to picking snails apart and are strong enough to crack the shells.

Weird Info: The name box crab comes from their distinctly bulky carapace, which, when at rest with the legs retracted, resembles a box. The name shamefaced is from the way the crab’s chelae (claws) fold up and cover its face, as if it were hiding its face in shame.

General Info:

• Calappa granulata is very inactive, sometimes not moving for several days.
• Typically, it burrows down in the sand with just obtruding eyes, antennae, and upper parts of the carapace and forceps.
• The large forceps will form a breathing cave behind them, thus hampering any sand from running in.
• The crab is well camouflaged in its resting place, and it is very difficult to spot as it rarely moves

Που τα συναντάμε:  Στις ακτές του ανατολικού Ατλαντικού, σε Ευρωπαϊκές ακτές, στην Ερυθρά θάλασσα και σε όλη τη Μεσόγειο.

Μέγεθος: 10 cm

Μέσο προσδόκιμο ζωής: Χωρίς καταγραφές (παρόμοια είδη ζούνε έως και 10 χρόνια)

Διατροφή: Τρέφονται με μαλάκια και δίθυρα. Έχουν αρκετή δύναμη, τόση όση χρειάζεται για να σπάνε το κέλυφος σαλιγκαριών.

Η περίεργη πληροφορία για τα ντροπαλά καβούρια: Το όνομά τους «ντροπαλό καβούρι» προέρχεται από το κόκκινο χρώμα της ντροπής και από το γεγονός ότι κρατάει τις δαγκάνες του μπροστά από το πρόσωπό του, πράγμα που το κάνει να  φαίνεται σαν να ντρέπεται.

Γενικές πληροφορίες:

• Δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα δραστήριο. Μπορεί να παραμείνει ακίνητο ακόμα και για μέρες.
• Για να κρυφτεί, θάβεται κάτω από την άμμο αφήνοντας να φαίνονται μόνο οι κεραίες και τα μάτια του.
• Λόγω της ικανότητάς του να κρύβεται τόσο καλά είναι αρκετά δύσκολο να το συναντήσουμε στο φυσικό του περιβάλλον.
