The pharyngeal jaws are located in the throat and are responsible for transporting prey from the oral cavity to the esophagus. After the eel captures prey with its oral jaws, the pharyngeal jaws lunge forward, grasp the prey, and pull it into the throat for swallowing.

Η περίεργη πληροφορία για τις σμέρνες: Έχουν έναν τρομερό μηχανισμό για να τρέφονται. Εκτός από το φυσιολογικό σαγόνι, έχουν και το φαρυγγικό σαγόνι το οποίο βρίσκεται στο λαιμό και εξυπηρετεί τη μεταφορά του φαγητού από το στόμα στον οισοφάγο. Όταν λοιπόν, πιάσουν την λεία τους, το εσωτερικό σαγόνι έρχεται μπροστά και τραβάει το φαγητό στον λαιμό του ζώου.
