Name: Mediterranean Red Sea Starfish (Echinaster sepositus)

Where we find them: From Brittany and into the Mediterranean and the Cape Verde Islands.

Size: 20 cm

Average lifespan: 5 years.

Diet: Scavengers.

Weird Info: While starfish usually have 5 arms, some of them have 6 or even 7. They can regrow a lost or damaged limb.

General Info:

• This species is a bright red or red brick with small pits on its arms.
• Its round arms have small feet – called tube feet – with suckers on the end. It uses them to move around, collect, and feed on organic particles from the sea bottom.
• It lives on rocky bottoms and in Posidonia seagrass beds down to depths of 300 meters.
• The way they eat is very curious, as instead of ingesting their food and having internal digestion, they can bring out their stomach, wrap up their prey, and dissolve it with the gastric acids; in other words, perform an external digestion and then absorb the result.

Πού τους συναντάμε: Από τη Βρετανία μέχρι τη Μεσόγειο και το Πράσινο Ακρωτήρι. Στον ανατολικός Ατλαντικός, από την Πορτογαλία έως το Μαρόκο και τις Αζόρες. Τους συναντάμε επίσης και στην Μεσόγειο.

Μέγεθος: 20 εκατοστά.

Μέσο προσδόκιμο ζωής: 5 χρόνια.

Διατροφή: Πτωματοφάγοι.

Η περίεργη πληροφορία για τους κόκκινους αστερίες: Ενώ οι αστερίες έχουν συνήθως 5 πόδια, κάποιοι από αυτούς έχουν 6 ή και 7. Είναι σε θέση να αναγεννήσουν ένα χαμένο ή τραυματισμένο μέλος τους.

Γενικές πληροφορίες:

• Τα πόδια τους έχουν μικρές βεντούζες στην άκρη. Τις χρησιμοποιούν για να κινούνται και να συλλέγουν σωματίδια από τον πυθμένα της θάλασσας με τα οποία τρέφονται.
• Ζούνε σε βραχώδεις σε βάθη έως και 300 μέτρα.
• Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο τρώνε είναι πολύ περίεργος καθώς αντί να καταναλώνουν την τροφή τους και να έχουν εσωτερική πέψη, μπορούν να βγάλουν το στομάχι τους, να τυλίξουν το θήραμά τους και να το διαλύσουν με τα γαστρικά οξέα. Με άλλα λόγια, κάνουν εξωτερική πέψη και στη συνέχεια απορροφούν την τροφή.
