Name: Spider Crab (Maja squinado)

Where we find them: Mediterranean; from Spain, north to Slovenia, and east to Turkey

Size: 22 cm

Average lifespan: No records.

Diet: Omnivorous: they consume algae, mollusks, bivalves, polychaeta and echinoderms.

Weird Info: They look like giant sea spiders, and this is why their name is Spider Crab.

General Info:

• They live to depths of about 0 – 90 meters but have been reported to depths of 150 meters as well. Their habitat is the rocky bottoms with algae.
• They do mass migrations. Every autumn, thousands of these crabs migrate from shallow coastal waters to deeper areas, forming huge walking clusters on the seabed. It looks like a crab army moving.
• They cover their shells with seaweed, sponges, and debris to camouflage themselves from predators.
• If caught by a predator or trapped, they can detach a leg to escape. The lost limb regrows.

Ηλικία: Χωρίς καταγραφές.

Διατροφή: Παμφάγα: καταναλώνουν φύκια, μαλάκια, δίθυρα, πολύχαιτους και εχινόδερμα.

Η Περίεργη πληροφορία  για τα καβούρια αράχνες: Μοιάζουν με τεράστιες αράχνες εξού και το όνομα καβούρι αράχνη.

Γενικές πληροφορίες:

• Ζούνε σε βάθη από 0 έως 90 μέτρα αλλά έχουν βρεθεί και σε μεγαλύτερα βάθη έως 150 μέτρα. Προτιμάνε τους βραχώδεις βυθούς με φύκια.
• Κάνουν μαζικές μεταναστεύσεις το φθινόπωρο αναζητώντας μεγαλύτερα βάθη. Είναι τόσο πολλά που μοιάζουν με στρατό καβουριών.
• Τοποθετούν στο σώμα τους φύκια για καμουφλάζ.
•  Σε περίπτωση που πιαστούν από έναν θηρευτή μπορούν να κόψουν το ίδιο τους το πόδι για να γλιτώσουν.
